I’m very happy to introduce our new star ranking system of trail cameras. I did this to, hopefully, make it easier to rank and sort through different cameras and their reviews.
The cumulative star rank is based of of 4 main categories and 12 sub-categories.
The 4 main categories are:
- Detection Circuit (which is based from trigger speed, recovery time and detection zone)
- Picture Quality (which is from day quality and night quality)
- Battery Life (which is from resting current draw, day current draw, night current draw and duration of photo)
- Ease of use (this includes case design, programming and durability)
Each is weighted equally. Each is ranked based of of how it compares to all other competitors.
For example: If a camera scores in the 90th percentile for trigger speeds, it is awarded 5 stars. If the same camera scores in the 50th percentile for recovery time, it is awarded 2.5 stars. Then, the camera scores in the 80th percentile for detection zones and gets 4 stars. The combined star rating for detection circuit would be 3.8 stars.
This is a dynamic system and ranking could change based off of what other cameras do. In other words, Reconyx has a blistering trigger speed which gives it a 5 star ranking. However, if someone comes out with a trigger speed that is faster, then Reconyx’s ranking would go down to reflect that.
I sincerely hope this system is beneficial for you. It will take time to get all the cameras ranked, but I am placing rankings as fast as I possibly can.
